| | | The true essence and history of Jiu-Jitsu are there to be found in its title. The ancient term "jiu jitsu" comes out of two words meaning "gentle art" in Japanese. "Ju" is also translated as "pliant", "flexible", "yielding", or "soft" -- which helps describe the principle Ju at work in the martial art's practice. Jiu-jitsu practitioners are taught to meet force with yielding, and then answer the opening the opponent's force has created with their own application of force. The "soft" quality of Ju harks back to the discipline's origin in he Samurai tradition: an unarmed warrior who faced an armed adversary would be required to employ the "soft", intuitive, anticipating side of his nature to disarm and defeat his foe. In short, the jiu-jitsu "gentle art" warrior uses the strength of his opponent to disable him.
